Overview

Sometimes it can be difficult to determine what an appropriate portion size is, especially when the food in question changes size when you cook it. On this page I've listed the portion sizes I find appropriate for various types of food.

Pasta

1 cup per person
For loose pasta, such as macaroni or tortellini I recommend 1 cup per person.
1/6 of a box per person
For string pasta like spaghetti it is tough to measure accurately, but somewhere around 1/6th of a box per person is appropriate.

Pasta Sauce

1/2 cup per person
Can be adjusted for taste, but this is usually enough.

Rice

1/2 cup per person
A half cup per person will be plenty, usually with a little left over.
